Book Review: The Hound of the Baskervilles by Arthur Conan Doyle

The book cover of The Hound of the Baskervilles by Arthur Conan Doyle typically features a dark, moody atmosphere that evokes mystery and suspense. Often illustrated with a fierce, ghostly hound set against the ominous backdrop of the moor, the design captures the eerie and thrilling nature of the story. This visual storytelling sets the tone for the classic detective tale, drawing readers into the chilling legend at its heart.

Some minor spoilers below…

This was my first Sherlock Holmes novel I have read. This book took place at the Baskerville Hall where it seemed like an ominous huge black dog was killing those who were Baskerville descendants. This all began due to a Hugo Baskerville who was psychotic and obsessed with a woman. He planned to force her to stay with him and tried to force her. It was until she escaped and he chased her where the huge black dog was present. This hound was believed to have killed him.

Sherlock Holmes is a very eccentric and high energy guy. For me, I could feel the excitement in the writing as Holmes would speak about a revelation. His hypotheses about the hound and the Baskerville manor were making sense to me. His questions on why someone would leave the manor and why someone would be killed were rampant. He played his own game - his own puzzle before any of the others knew. Even Watson!

The entire time I read this book, I kept trying to guess what happened. I kept trying to guess the cause of the hound. I was wrong most of the time besides who the main villain ended up being. But the villain’s backstory?! I definitely did not see that coming.

My favorite part of this book was reading how Holmes worked and how his mind figured things out. He made me chuckle a lot because some of the ways he would figure mysteries was how my brain worked. I could see his trail of thought and where it would end up going.

Needless to say, this book was 5/5 stars for me! I will definitely look into more Sherlock Holmes stories and see more mysteries. I am very interested in Arthur Conan Doyle’s writings as well.

I’ll see you in the next review! ~ Heather
